This rigid heddle style is used by Sami band weavers, as well as by the rest of us who love weaving bands. It is designed to separate the pattern threads (in the extra row of holes) from the ground threads. These ground threads create a plain weave background structure, which often has a colorful pattern of its own. With the addition of the pattern threads, you can create ornate bands using this relatively simple structure.
